Parks and Gardens
Central Copenhagen has many parks and gardens to be explored– some of them secret and tranquil places. If you venture a bit outside of the city, you can enjoy rural landscapes and forests that used to be owned by the kings.
An absolute favorite is the King’s Gardens. Against the backdrop of the renaissance Rosenborg Castle, its rose garden and extensive lawn are picture perfect. You can picnic on the lawn, while your guide tells the stories.
When after 1850 the ramparts of Copenhagen came down, much of the newly gained land became a stretch of parks. The Botanical Garden is a lovely and peaceful example of this. The Tivoli is also located on old military terrain and though it is known as an amusement park, it is one of the places in Copenhagen with the most flowers.
If you wish for a more modern version, ask your guide about roof-top gardens.
PARKS, NATURE AND LANDSCAPES
Even if we do not have any spectacular mountain scenery, you can still find lots of beautiful green vistas, much of it in, or close to the city.
Just north of the city you find Dyrehaven, The Deer Park, where herds of deer roam and hide amongst ancient oak trees. Pause to admire the Hermitage, the royal hunting lodge, where kings would enjoy a sumptuous lunch after a good hunt. Speaking of lunch there are several “watering holes” in the park – or you can visit the adjacent amusement park, Dyrehavsbakken, actually the oldest in the world.
One lovely way to experience the contrast between Copenhagen’s peaceful parks and bustling city life, is doing this tour by bicycle.
